Be Prepared for a Hurricane!
Posted on August 31, 2010 · Leave a CommentHey Weston-Lakeside! Hurricane season is in full force and I just wanted to make sure everyone is prepared this season. Hurricane Earl is making its way towards the east coast, and it is a category 4 storm! Here are a few tips for a family disaster plan, in case it does hit the North Carolina coast and affect us in any way:
- Discuss the type of hazards that could affect your family. Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
- Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your home but within your community.
- Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet. These should be measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles.
- Check your insurance coverage - flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance.
Are you prepared for a hurricane? What have you done to prepare?

“The Last Exorcism” is Out Today!
Posted on August 27, 2010 · Leave a CommentI’m not one for horror movies, but I’m sure some of you guys out there are! “The Last Exorcism” opens today nationwide!
It is in the horror movie genre, but I don’t know any good horror movies that were rated PG-13 like this movie. Hopefully the rating isn’t an indication of how good it is, because a lot of the reviews have been somewhat positive. Will you be going to see “The Last Exorcism”? Check it out at Regal Crossroads Stadium 20 this weekend and get a free small popcorn as well!

4Square It Up!
Posted on August 25, 2010 · Leave a CommentA new location-based social media platform has been dubbed the “Twitter of 2010″ by social media maverick Pete Cashmore. “Foursquare” is its name, and it has recently gotten over 100,000 users in just 10 days. What’s so special about it, you say? Well, people use it as a way to get instant reviews of different places around town directly from friends and peers. When you “check-in” (telling Foursquare where you are) to your favorite bar, friends can find you or recommend places of interest nearby. You add what you think of the establishment and everyone in your network sees it. It is also integrated to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.
If you frequent a certain place, you can become the “mayor” of said place, until someone takes your title by going there more than you! Being mayor has its benefits, as many businesses give away freebies to their most frequent customer.
Some may think it seems a bit stalker-esque, but don’t you tweet your whereabouts anyway? You might as well get some type of credit for going to your favorite restaurant all the time! I have been to a few spots where I have gotten discounts or freebies for checking in to their place of business. I believe it’s most utilized with a smartphone, so I use Foursquare with my Droid phone by Verizon.
So Weston-Lakeside, what do you think of Foursquare? Do you think Pete Cashmore is right? Is this a social media platform that you would or wouldn’t use?

Movies by Moonlight: Aliens vs. Predators
Posted on August 18, 2010 · Leave a CommentThis Thursday, August 19th, WakeMed Cary Hospital presents another installment of Movies by Moonlight at Cary’s Booth Amphitheatre. This week’s movie is the sci-fi thriller Aliens vs. Predators. I’m not sure how good this movie will be, (how many Alien and Predator movies can they seriously come up with?!) but I will definitely go just for the experience!
Tickets are only $3 and free for kids 12 and under. Concessions are sold, but you are also able to bring in your own food. My friends and I are thinking about bringing a picnic to save some money!
What is your favorite sci-fi/thriller movie?
School District Vaccinations!
Posted on August 13, 2010 · Leave a CommentThe kiddos are going back to school, and there are many things that have to be done to get them in the back in the school mode. One of these things is the dreaded vaccination! I still cringe at needles as an adult!! o_O
Here are a list of standard vaccinations for the Wake County School District. Before kindergarten, kids ages 4-6 must receive their last round of the following vaccinations:
- DTaP: Prevents a child from getting bacterial infections such as diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, or whooping cough.
- MMR: Prevents measles, mumps and rubella.
- IPV: The inactivated polio vaccine prevents poliomyelitis, a disease that leads to the loss of movement.
- Chickenpox: Prevents children from contracting the varicella-zoster virus, or chickenpox. Children are required to receive two chickenpox vaccinations (the first is administered when the child is 12-15 months old) because the initial shot is only effective in 95% of all recipients.
Check out more info on vaccinations here. Have your kids gotten all the shots they need?
